Flora

This region is home to a vast and diverse flora and fauna. It hosts endemic species and a great biodiversity. The Meullín-Puye Nature Sanctuary  is located in a humid temperate coastal ecoregion, and characterized by the absence of a dry season. 

The Meullín-Puye Nature Sanctuary has areas covered in dense old-growth native forest, evergreen deciduous forest, and Andean temperate deciduous scrub, which is home to 13% of the national population of Nothofagus antarctica, commonly known as ñirre. Forests cover about 65% of the protected area. Within the forest, one can find Magellan’s beech (Nothofagus betuloides), lenga beech (Nothofagus pumilio), Chiloé’s coigue (Nothofagus nitida), tepa (Laureliopsis philippiana), Guaitecas cypress (Pilgerodendron uviferum), and ñirre. Other species in this area include: winter’s bark (Drimys winteri), tineo (Weinmannia trichosperma), mañío de hojas punzantes (Podocarpus nubigenus), and funga. Some of these species are endemic to Chile and Argentina,and listed as endangered or threatened.
